FAQ’S

A. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, also known as BJJ, can be traced back to Japanese Kodokan Judo, which was originally developed from Japanese Jujutsu, meaning ‘gentle art’.

In the early 20th Century, Mitsuyo Maeda, a 7th dan Judo black belt, travelled to Brazil in one of his many travels to promote “jiu-do” and to challenge boxers and wrestlers along the way. At one of his demonstrations he met Carlos Gracie, who would later become Maeda’s student and a teacher to his brother, Helio Gracie. The two brothers are recognised as the founders of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

A. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the ideal style for anyone, regardless of their size, gender or build. Some people want to learn self-defence or improve their fighting skills while others want to improve their fitness in a fun and challenging way.

The techniques used in BJJ aren’t about making the strongest, fastest punch or kick. Instead, BJJ focuses on first making yourself safe and then controlling your opponent by tactically applying joint locks or chokes to submit them if necessary. BJJ is the science of fighting, you don’t need to simulate what you would do if someone was to attack you where you would poke them in eye etc that can’t be trained so how do you know you will be fast enough or accurate enough to do that move most martial arts require that faith that it will work, in BJJ we test everything, every move you learn can be tested against someone trying their hardest to stop you so you will know that it works how it works and if they block it in some way exactly where to go next and keep yourself in the safest and most effective position to neutralise the fight.

A. We are a specialist club for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu where the focus is on developing your skills in a fun and friendly environment. Whether you’re looking for adult or kids classes (or both), you’ll find a welcoming group of people who will help you fulfil your potential.

Our club members can compete too if they want to. As they grow older they can join our Teens class and then progress into the Adults group when they reach 17. We view age as a guideline, however we take into account a student’s ability, size and as they get older they will also be able to attend an open mat session to train with older students to make the transition to older age groups easier. BJJ is a martial art you can enjoy throughout your life and many kids choose to carry it on as adults, for fun and competitively.
